Most often, we get carried away by fresh food available in the market that we end up buying more than we need. This is one disadvantage of going out to shop groceries without a budget.
Keeping your family on a pretty tight food budget every month is all about being self-disciplined and cooking from home. There are tricks that everyone can use to reduce the amount they spend on food. For many families it means following several different strategies each month.
Here are top five strategies for cutting on food bill:
Planning a menu and grocery list.
Planning a two week menu and do the majority of money in one trip to the grocery store. Your menu should include everything from breakfasts, lunch and dinners to the snacks your family needs. Things that do not last for long like bread, fruits and vegetables can be bought every week.
Using meat sparingly and taking advantage of the leftovers.
Eliminate the meat from some of your recipes and use beans as a substitute, which saves a lot of money and generally does not affect the taste. When its chicken time, buy the whole bird and save some chicken to prepare with other dishes the next day.
Using leftovers can save a lot of money. Plan in a leftover night or try to use the leftovers in lunches for the family. The savings on the lunches is worth cooking a bit extra each evening. The home cooked meals are a lot healthier for you than most fast food or processed pre-made lunches, as well.
Using a slow cooker is also a huge money save. If you want to prepare dinner in time and avoid eating out, use a slow cooker. You can cook nearly everything in a slow cooker from pasta to meats and soups.
